Mastitis
What is Mastitis?
Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast tissue that can cause pain, swelling, warmth, and sometimes infection. It often develops when a milk duct becomes blocked or milk isn’t drained effectively, leading to a painful lump, redness with or without flu-like symptoms such as fever, aches, and fatigue.
Although mastitis is common, it should be taken seriously. If left untreated, it can progress quickly. Physiotherapy treatments, including therapeutic ultrasound which is aimed at reducing inflammation, reducing pain, and improve milk flow all while supporting a faster recovery.
Signs & Symptoms to Look For:
Breast pain, swelling, redness or warmth
A firm or tender lump
Fever, chills or flu-like symptoms
Worsening pain when feeding or expressing
Nipple Pain
What is Nipple Pain?
Nipple pain is commonly due to cracked nipples. This is small breaks in the skin of the nipple that can cause sharp pain during and after feeding. When severe, you can notice little “blisters” on the nipple. This may occur from poor attachment, friction, or natural skin sensitivity after birth. Cracked nipples can also bleed or become infected if not managed properly.
While common, cracked nipples are not something you need to simply “push through.” Physiotherapy can help with low level laser therapy (LLLT) which is a safe, painless treatment that speeds up tissue repair, reduces pain, and supports healing.
Signs & Symptoms to Look For:
Sharp or burning nipple pain during/after feeds
Pain with latching
Visible cracks, blisters or bleeding
Signs of infection (redness, swelling, discharge)
